Extended Planting Season

Cell-grown plants can be planted almost year-round in suitable conditions, far beyond the traditional bare root planting window of November to March. This flexibility allows planting to proceed when ground conditions and weather are favourable, eliminating delays caused by rigid seasonal constraints. Warmer soil temperatures outside the bare root season promote faster establishment and initial growth. Projects can maintain momentum without waiting for the next planting season, particularly valuable for phased developments or schemes with tight completion deadlines.

Improved Root System

The entire root system is protected within compost, keeping delicate fibrous roots intact and preventing desiccation during lifting, transport, and planting. Unlike bare root stock where roots are exposed and vulnerable to damage, cell-grown plants retain their complete root structure. The uniform shape of the cell creates a compact, fibrous root mass that transplants without disturbance. This intact root system begins growing immediately after planting with no recovery period required from transplant shock.

Effortless Storage

Cell-grown stock can be stored outdoors on site before planting without labour-intensive heeling-in or cold storage facilities. Trays are stackable and require minimal ground space, simplifying site logistics for large schemes. Plants remain viable with basic watering, eliminating the urgency and complication of managing bare root stock that must be planted immediately or carefully stored. This flexibility reduces labour costs and allows planting to be scheduled around weather, ground conditions, and workforce availability.

Easy Planting

The compact, uniform root structure allows rapid handling and planting compared to bare root stock. Planters can work at higher rates with less physical effort, reducing labour costs significantly on large-scale projects. The neat cell format is compatible with mechanical planting equipment for forestry schemes, or enables fast manual planting for hedgerows and smaller areas. No root preparation, trimming, or spreading is required—plants go straight from tray to ground. This efficiency translates directly into reduced establishment costs per unit.

Higher Survival Rate

The undisturbed root system guarantees significantly higher establishment rates compared to bare root alternatives. Survival rates typically exceed 90% even on challenging sites, eliminating the cost and disruption of large-scale replacement planting. This reliability is particularly valuable for grant-funded schemes, planning conditions, and BNG projects where planting targets must be met within specific timeframes. Reduced failure rates mean lower defect liability costs and faster project sign-off.

Cost-Saving

Whilst cell-grown stock carries a modest premium over bare root for certain species, the total project cost is typically lower once establishment success is factored in. Reduced replanting requirements, lower labour costs through faster planting rates, and higher survival rates deliver significant savings that far exceed any initial price difference. The ability to plant during extended seasons also reduces programme delays and associated holding costs. For commercial schemes, the guaranteed establishment translates into predictable budgets and eliminated contingency spend on replacement stock.

Contract Growing

Forward planning for large developments or phased projects. We secure specific species and quantities up to 24 months in advance, locking in pricing and guaranteeing availability. Stock is grown or reserved to your exact specification, eliminating substitution risk and procurement delays when your site reaches the planting phase.
